Learning the guitar.

Learning the guitar for your DofE skills section will teach you; dexterity, rhythm, hand-eye co-ordination, reduce stress, improve your creativity & cognitive function.

There are three approaches to learning the guitar with MK Guitar Tuition. Online, face to face or with MKGTV.

MKGTV is an educational subscription service designed to teach beginner guitarists and improve their skills to the intermediate level.

Online tuition will take place using Zoom and face to face tuition takes place in Milton Keynes.

Welcome. Are you aged 14-24 looking to complete your bronze, silver or gold awards? Are you someone who enjoys a challenge? Learning the guitar could be for you.

You’ve either completed or are completing your residential / expedition and you’re now looking to find a skill that you’re going to enjoy to help achieve your bronze, silver or gold.

Because MK Guitar Tuition is an Approved Activity Provider for The Duke of Edinburgh Awards, you can now complete your skills section from the comfort of your own home – online, face to face, or via MKGTV.

Duke of Edinburgh award requirements

In most cases, once you’ve started to learn the guitar you’ll realise how you could also achieve your gold award. With motivation and practice, you’ll enjoy the challenge of learning the guitar to complete your skills section .


At the bronze level you could achieve and enjoy:

• Chord Clarity with strumming patterns

• 12 Bar Blues sequences

• Introduction to some basic rhythms

• Classical, electric or acoustic riffs & tunes

At the Silver level you could achieve and enjoy:

• Intermediate chord shapes

• Intermediate strumming and picking patterns

• You may have started some music theory (ABRSM)

• Beginning to feel confident about performing a tune or two

At the Gold level you could achieve and enjoy:

• You’re becoming a confident guitarist

• You’ll understand what it takes to learn and practice

Perhaps have achieved grade 3 music theory (ABRSM)

• Have discovered your guitar style

Bronze Silver or Gold?

Bronze:

• 3 months

Half hour with 30 mins practice each week

Hourly with practice

• Aged 14-24

Silver:

• 6 months

Half hour with 30 mins practice each week

30/60 mins each week with practice

• Aged 14-24

Gold:

• 12 months

30/60 mins each week with practice

Hourly with practice

• Aged 14-24


Completing your DofE awards shows that you have a particular mind set which Universities and employers look for when selecting candidates. You might have learned the guitar face to face or online either way shows that you’re adaptable and have interests outside your core subjects.

60 minutes sessions

Lessons are fun and engaging and split between practical and theoretical.

Within the first three months, you’ll be learning how to play basic open chord shapes and guitar riffs.

Your understanding will advance and you may have even completed grade 1 music theory using the ABRSM syllabus.

Grades 1-5 are available with ABRSM. Online exams are available at the end of each grade.

30 minutes sessions

New to the guitar? Within your 30 minute lesson you’ll be practicing chord shapes in the open position, the 12 bar blues and some theory.

Once you’re comfortable transitioning & strumming the chords from the correct string, we’ll then start learning tunes at the appropriate level.

What’s your learning style?

You can learn online, face to face or with MKGTV – an on demand video lesson service. Online lessons take place using Zoom each week just like a regular lesson.

MK Guitar Tuition (DofE)

Working with an approved tutor such as Milton Keynes Guitar Tuition will make signing off your skills section a lot easier. Each AAP is individually approved by the Duke of Edinburgh awards.

Does the DofE provide UCAS points?

Although the DofE doesn’t provide any UCAS points as such, completing any level will show the university that you have other interests as well enhancing your CV for future employment.

It shows commitment, you can use the DofE to demonstrate how it increased your confidence, developed your learning style, improved your skill set. Remember it’s not just your skills set that your demonstrating, it’s also about our physical and volunteering activities too.
