Build Confidence
Learning the classical guitar is a more formal approach but with similar techniques to that of finger-style guitar. You’ll learn how to read music, engage with music theory and really start to master the fretboard. You’ll begin to understand how to play the same note but in different places across the fretboard.
DofE – New skill
Completing the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award through Bronze, Silver, and Gold is a great way to build confidence, resilience, and independence. The Skills section encourages you to develop a new ability over time, helping you set goals, stay committed, and track your progress.

Classical guitar for your DofE Skills section
Bronze, Silver or Gold, for 14–24 year olds. Goals set together at your first lesson, regular one-to-one lessons, and your Assessor's Report written for eDofE at the end. Beginners very welcome.

- A nylon-string classical guitar in the right size (smaller sizes for younger children)
- A footstool or guitar support

Questions
What size guitar does my child need?
It depends on height and arm length. Younger children usually start on a 1/2 or 3/4 size guitar. I am happy to advise before you buy.
Do I need to read music?
Not to start. Reading is taught step by step as part of every lesson, and most students are reading simple pieces within weeks.
Is classical guitar harder than other styles?
It is different rather than harder. The focus on technique and reading builds skills that help with every other style too.
Can classical guitar count for my DofE?
Yes. Classical guitar is a great Skills section activity at Bronze, Silver and Gold.
