Music Theory (DofE)
Do you want to know more about music theory without learning an instrument? Perhaps you already know how to play your instrument but want to improve your knowledge. Either way music theory can be a worth while step in developing your skill and knowledge.
Many musicians learn to play before they can read and many learn to read whilst they’re learning to play. Guitarists are particularly notorious for not learning to read music. Theory is quite a lot more convenient to learn that it used to be.
With attractive workbooks to use and online learning provided by MK Guitar Tuition and online exam facilities provided by ABRSM, it’s never been easier to learn from home where ever you are.
Approved activity provider

MK Guitar Tuition is an approved activity provider for the Duke of Edinburgh awards you’ll be able to complete your skills section in music theory with certification provided by ABRSM, an organisation recognised world-wide.
With an hourly lesson every week you could complete grade 1 within 3 months, grades 2/3 within the first 8 months and grades 3- 5 within 18 months.
It doesn’t matter what instrument it is you’re learning you can learn Music Theory with MK Guitar Tuition. If you’re a guitarist you might like to learn music theory from another guitar player who understands how to improvise and read notation.
Music theory is language
Music & music theory is a language of it’s own. Whether you’re used to reading or playing by ear it’s important to be able to communicate your musical ideas to the wider audience in as many different ways as possible.
What ever instrument it is you play, being able to write down your music using notational software would be a great compliment to your online videos as it will help with the different learning styles and make your videos even more educational and engaging to watch.
Whether you want to learn music theory to help other musicians to understand your compositions or for you to understand theirs, completing the ABRSMs grades 1-5 for the Duke of Edinburgh’s skills section could be a great way to advance your understanding and complete your bronze silver or gold award.
Within 13 weeks you could complete your grade 1 music theory. With in 12 months you could have completed grade 3 and within 18 months you could have accomplished grade 5.
Once you’ve completed ABRSM’s workbooks I will then be able to book the exams online for you to complete at home at any given time within 30 days. Within a few weeks your certification will arrive by post.
Music theory, describe what’s happening
Being able to describe a chord type, the sound of a scale or the direction of which a melody or accompaniment is going is useful for when learning and instrument and talking about music in general with other musicians or with your music teacher. It’s appreciated by those who know when you can describe things in a musical way and impressive to those who do not.
Should I learn music theory before I start learning an instrument?
Learning music theory compliments the instrument that you’re learning or want to learn and general musicality.
In some ways it’s better to have started to learn by ear as you’ll develop improvisation skills which some can find difficult to learn particularly, if you’ve learnt to read notation first. Either way it’s all teachable but the most important ingredient is do you you want to?
Learning music theory (Dofe) isn’t just about understanding your own instrument
Learning about music theory is as much about understanding the capabilities of other instruments as it is your own. If you want to include instruments in your compositions it’s useful to know what note ranges they have and what clef they play in. They’ll appreciate that you’ve thought about what’s possible and what makes their instrument sound good, making their performance more enjoyable to play.
