Guitar Tuition - Alex Partington updates (news feed)

Checking your guitar

Before we begin playing, we’ll take a quick look at your guitar:

  • Condition of strings
  • Tuning stability
  • Action and playability
  • Restring or general setup required

This ensures you start with an instrument that feels good and supports your progress.

Knowledge check

We’ll talk briefly about your background:

  • Whether you’ve played before
  • Any gaps in your playing
  • What you’d like to achieve
  • Chords & Scales

This helps tailor the session to your needs.

30, 45 or 60 mins?

Most beginners and returning players benefit from a focused 30‑minute session. During this time, you’ll:

  • Rebuild dexterity
  • Refresh basic coordination
  • Play simple patterns or chords
  • Basic Chords / Barre chords (int)

It’s structured but relaxed, giving you space to settle in.

A Clear, relaxed start.

Knowledge Check PDF

This PDF is designed for complete beginners as well as anyone returning to the guitar after a break. It’s a quick way to check what you already know and fill in any gaps. Most students start with this pack, so it’s well worth downloading. (Coming soon)

Download Zoom (online)

If you’re opting in for online tuition, whether online some of the time or permanently, you’ll need to download Zoom, instead of using the web browser. This is because you’ll need to turn on the original sound under audio settings. Zoom link provide once a time has been confirmed.

Bring your guitar

Whether you’re a beginner, or you’re already playing, you’ll need to bring your guitar. It’s understandable if you’re not sure what to buy. If you’ve never played before, I always recommend the Yamaha C40 II full size or three quarter sized guitar. Classical and acoustic guitars are different due to what the strings are made out of. Nylon strings are for classical guitar and are  a lot easier on the fingers. Regardless of what style you want to do, the beginnings are the same.

DBS Checked

I am fully DBS‑checked, and safeguarding is taken seriously in every lesson. For students under 18, a parent or guardian must remain present during in‑person sessions, and must be within the same room or immediate area during online lessons. This ensures a safe, transparent learning environment and helps younger players feel supported while they settle into their guitar tuition.

Setting your goals

Grades, confidence, DofE.

Grades

You can work towards RSL Rockschool or Trinity Rock & Pop practical guitar exams from Grade 1–8, focusing on contemporary playing and performance. For theory, ABRSM Grades 1–5 are available using the official workbooks. Exams are optional — many students simply use the graded material to support their learning.

Confidence

Building confidence in both practical guitar skills and music theory is key to steady progress. Whether you are preparing for graded exams or simply want to understand the fundamentals better, we focus on strengthening your playing ability alongside your theoretical knowledge. This balanced approach helps you feel more assured in performances and exams.

DofE

For young people aged 14–24 can complete their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award skills section with guitar lessons, available online or in person. You can work towards Bronze, Silver, or Gold, with structured weekly progress, clear goals, and simple evidence tracking to meet DofE requirements.
