Guitar Straps.
When a beginner buys a guitar it’s usually a beginner’s guitar that is of a decent enough quality to practice on but they’ll need to upgrade in the future. Buying a nice guitar strap as an accessory would be a great way to encourage them for years to come. Which ever stage of guitar playing they’re at or you’re at, a good quality strap that will last for years is a great idea and will be used on many guitars to come.
Leather guitar straps such as Levi’s
Guitar leads (good quality ones)
Leads that usually come with starter packs are usually of poor quality Buying a couple of guitar leads that are of quality is great idea and another item that you can never have too many of. But there are many types of leads. Guitar leads are 1/4 jack leads and here are a few leads that would be worth buying and impress if you’re buying as a gift. Earnie Ball Guitar Leads
Decent plectrums.
Newbies take a while to find their plectrum of choice. The plectrum used can have the effect on the quality of the sound when strumming the strings. It can either sound like the plectrum is in control or it can sound like the guitarist is in control, The thickness of the plectrum can change the delivery of the sound. A thicker pic will be harder to use but you’ll have more control once used to it. Here’s my plectrum of choice which often goes down well. Jazz III picks
Guitar Tuners
Choosing the right guitar tuner is often over looked. If they’re tuning a guitar using their mobile phone, once they start performing or end up in a noisier environment, the phone will quickly become obsolete. Tuning using your phone will detect every noise possible whereas these tuners that I’m about to recommend will be specific to the instrument. Tuning in noisy environments now becomes possible!
Guitar Cases for acoustic /electric
Starter packs or even when a more upmarket guitar is purchased guitars usually come with a guitar case. I wouldn’t buy a guitar case as a gift for this reason. If a good enough quality guitar has been handed down, then there might be good reason to purchase a nice guitar case. So here are a few choices for you to choose from..
Electric Guitar Strings
Guitar strings are different to one another depending on which type of guitar it is you have. Electric guitar strings have specific guitar strings as do classical, acoustic and bass guitars, Guitar strings can vary depending on which genre it is your into too.
For now though I’m going to keep it simple and provide you with links for what I like to use. If you or they are an established player, it might be better to ask what they prefer.
For electric guitar strings, I like to use these Earnie Balls Gauge 10s.
Acoustic Guitar Strings
For Acoustic guitar strings I like to use Elixer, gauge 11s.
Classical Guitar Strings
And for Classical guitar strings I like to use D’Addario.
Pedals
If they’re approaching grade three for electric guitar, it might be a nice idea to buy a guitar pedal for about £50 or so. If they haven’t started this venture yet, a nice starting point would be a BOSS DS2 which is a distortion pedal Graded pieces as do any pieces often have clean and distorted sections so switching between the two sound types would be a great asset to have when performing or recording for examinations..
