The classical guitar style links nicely to finger-style acoustic guitar because each technique has similarities and the comparison is often over looked. You could argue finger-style is more informal and uses tablature notation whereas classical guitar uses notation and you are learning to read music.

For grades

Grades compliment structure and develops a ‘focused’ deep dive into learning notation from grade 1 all the way through to grade 8. Pass, merit and distinctions are graded appropriately and you can submit your exam online in a continuous video format,  or in person.

At the beginning of everyone’s guitar journey the basics are the same regardless of which style it is you want to achieve. Once beyond the basics, now would be a good time to decide which style of guitar playing you’d like to develop.

Learning classical guitar has the added pressure of knowing how to read music. The way you learn a classical piece of music is quite different from rock, or finger-style because there isn’t any tablature. The best way to start is to have basic music theory under your belt and complete grade 1 – 2 with ABRSM. Then when we communicate it’s in the same language. 

Learning music theory first before learning to play, isn’t a bad idea, but if you’d like to combine the the two, 45 minutes might be a better option. The start of any guitar style has similarities which then develop into the style by learning theory using ABRSM and Focusing on an exam board with Trinity or ABSRM Classical. We could also decide which pieces we’d like to work.

With a 60 minute session each week, not only are you combining two years worth of half hour into a year, you would have enough time to learn both; theory and classical guitar.
