Music theory tuition, geared towards general musicianship. Learning theory with ABRSM, will provide you with a solid framework of knowledge that you can build from. Talking to other guitar players about ‘guitar theory’ is great, but you want to be able to communciate generically across the range of instruments in a language that makes sense to them too.
Complete grades 1-5 when you feel ready and at a time to suit your schedule. Lessons are conveniently available online too at the same time each week. You’ll receive 41 lessons per accedemic year (September – 31st July). Lessons are term time.
Whether you want to just want to learn music theory and work through the grades or you’d like to mix it up and spend some time applying the music theory you’ve learned with an hours tuition each week, you can either book a half hour or a block of four at either the 30, 45 or 60 minute rate.
Grades 1-5 (ABRSM)

ABRSM
Grade 1 introduces the basics of music notation, including the stave, clefs, and simple note values. Students learn time signatures (2/4, 3/4, 4/4), basic key signatures (C, G, and F major), and simple dynamics like p and f. The focus is on reading, writing, and understanding very simple musical elements.

ABRSM
Grade 2 expands on Grade 1 with more key signatures (up to two sharps or flats) and introduces compound time like 6/8. Students learn dotted notes, ties, slurs, and articulation marks such as staccato. It builds confidence in interpreting and writing more complex rhythms and melodies.

ABRSM
Grade 3 includes key signatures up to four sharps/flats and introduces minor scales. Students learn about tonic triads, triplets, and simple transposition. It deepens understanding of musical form, rhythm, and harmony. You’l be confidently communicating the language of music too.

ABRSM
Grade 4-5 introduces cadences, musical texture, and more advanced transposition. Key signatures now include up to five sharps/flats, with a focus on both harmonic and melodic minor scales. Students analyze form, recognize chords, and explore more refined musical terminology.

ABRSM
Grade 5 introduces cadences, musical texture, and more advanced transposition. Key signatures now include up to five sharps/flats, with a focus on both harmonic and melodic minor scales. Students analyze form, recognize chords, and explore more refined musical terminology.
